Hey all, I haven't been here in a while so maybe I missed something, but the black text on black background is a bit hard to use. I have to highlight the page to be able to read it. Mods, can you do something about that? Thank you! :)

Name:  (Rachel) Belle
Age: 21 (22 at the end of April)
Grade/School: Kind of a senior in college, haha.  I'm not done with my education degree yet, so I'll be here for a while.
Location:  West Virginia
Sex:  female
Deaf/HOH/Hearing/other:  Hearing
Your Hobbies/Interests:  I love creative writing.  Writing and sign language are two areas that I've been incredibly interested in since I was a grade-schooler.  I read a lot, so I guess that makes me a nerd, lol.
Favorite Movies: I love Disney movies: the Little Mermaid is my favorite.  I also like a League of their Own.  Ever After.  50 First Dates.  ...I watch a lot of movies, so it's kind of hard to pick just a few as my favorites.  I love scary movies, too.

****I've actually joined this community in hopes of getting a deaf (or hearing individual experienced in ASL) videopal.  I graduated last summer with my Associate's in American Sign Language Communications/Interpreting, not because I want to interpret so much as I just wanted to know the language.  But, since coming back to school, I haven't been able to use what I've learned and I feel my signing skills depleting.  I need some help.  (=  I have a webcam!  Maybe we can communicate via that - and someone can help me get my skills up again?

Hi there,

There's a group of us conducting a survey on captioning/ subtitles in the theatre, and we would love to have people fill in a short questionnaire of their experience(s).

Please note that this is open to Hearing, Hard of Hearing and Deaf people, from all countries and regardless of whether its been a good experience or bad.

We only ask that you have seen at least one captioned performance in a theatre, -no movies/films.

Fill out!

Thank you very much for your time, and please feel free to pass this on to anyone else you feel could contribute.

How many of you live in NC? well I'm just curious to see if there's any Deaf actors that would be interested in doing a short Deaf film?

I just graduated from a community college and have been trying like hell for two years to find anyone would be interested in a doing a short film....no it's nothing bad, it's more like a short comedy almost.

Anyways, if you know anyone that would be interested I would really appreciate it, if not, then any interpreters interested?

Hi

I'm hearing, but I am taking an American Sign Language class and am considering a career in translating, so I figured it'd be cool to join up a community where Deaf issues are addressed to give me more of an idea what's out there.

One of the requirements of the class is to attend a Deaf event and then write a report on it, and I am having trouble finding one that I can attend. A daytime weekend one or something in the eveing during the week would be ideal. I'm still looking, and I live in Kitsap county, of Washington, so I don't know how many or if anybody lives or knows about the events here, but I just thought I would throw that out there. Thanks!

REMOVAL OF AGBELL'S PLAQUE AND RENAMING AGBELL HALL! [10 Feb 2008|09:50am]

kulieishchick
qRight now, we have huge issue with AGBELL's letter to Pepsi. If you are unsure about that, I suggest you go www.deafread.com. Catch up on your deafnews!

Now, I dont know if all of you have been to RIT campus or you have and might overlooked. Or you have noticed that RIT have a dorm named after Alexander Graham Bell.

Bell dorm has a plaque that say about his accomplishments and so on.. one thing that really bothers me the most is that NTID still follow and copy his ideas today (i dont memorize the exact wordings).

AGBell's ideas:
Deaf people cannot marry each together (to prevent making more deaf babies and prevent from spreading ASL)
Deaf people cannot become teachers (because deaf teachers cannot correct deaf student's speeches and prevent from teaching ASL)

in the bottom line, he do not support deaf people to use ASL.

so anyway.. i need your help to sign this petition..

sign for "hot"/"sexy" [31 Jan 2008|09:40pm]

My friend and I were talking/signing today (both of us hearing, though her brother's Deaf), and we've been using the sign "hot", like heated/warm/hot food, to describe people. I figure that's probably not how it works in the Deaf community. What sign do you use?

Thanks! And Happy New Year!! :)

Saw this on digg.com. It's pretty much common sense to us, but I figured others may enjoy it.

New to Community [03 Dec 2007|11:11pm]

I'm not sure exactly what this community is about.  I am a sign language interpreter and saw the community.  The name intrigued me.  I have been an interpreter for about 10 years.  In addition to interpreting I also teach interpreters in interpreter training programs. I also travel and teach medically-related sign language and interpreting to interpreters, students, hospital personnel.  My next workshop will be in Denver in February.  I'd love to learn more about this community and about the members.  Have a great week!

It seems like no one has posted here in forever. I thought I'd make a post.

Does anyone else out there who is mainstreamed have trouble in upper level classes? I'm in AP US History and our teacher lectures without overheads everyday for a full hour. It seems like all my interpreter is doing is finger spelling names. Gah! I have a really, really really hard time paying attention sometimes. Oh well.

Anyway just thought I’d write something here. Feel free to add me, I’m always looking for more Deaf (and HOH and hearing) friends!

I have a question! My friend (whose brother is Deaf) and I have started a club at our school about Sign Language and Deaf culture. We want to talk about what is different about what is rude in Deaf and hearing culture, but we can only think of a few things. (pointing, descriptions (e.g. fat, pregnant), snapping fingers, offensiveness of "hearing impaired") Is there anything we missed? Thank you!

My journal entries are more about my life story. I want to practice my writing skills and figured it would be great to write about the many stories that I'd love to tell. Check out my journal, and it might be best to read it from the first entry to current as I am going to try to make it flow chronologically.
